Energy Statistics for Scotland - Q1 2025

Overview of key facts and trends relating to energy in Scotland for Q1 2025

Road Transport Fuel Consumption

The latest fuel consumption figures for road vehicles in Scotland (figure 6) show that the total estimated fuel consumption in 2023 was 40,550 GWh. This is a 1.4% decrease compared to the estimated 41,121 GWh consumed in 2022 and a 1.5% decrease compared to the 2005-2007 baseline.

The full fuel consumption by road vehicles timeseries is revised each year to take account of methodological improvements, as well as revisions to underlying datasets. There have been two improvements made to the 2023 estimates: firstly, the geometry of the minor roads has been updated to include the latest Ordnance Survey data; secondly, heavy goods vehicles using natural gas have been included in these statistics for the first time.
